Booted to puppy and SDA1 has windows in it but not Documents and Settings folder. It gives a red screen saying to try access it later and when I click on it later it just has 1 folder that says system volume information on it. Easy check: put the USB stick in a modern computer and try to boot from it. Is the laptop came pre-installed with Win XP or did you installed a retail copy in it ? have a peek here

D:\MINITis probably a WinPE installation used for restoring OS to factory state. From what I've read online about the NTLDR error is that it could be any number of things. I do this nothing happens.. etc. Check This Out This is likely more than just the file system going bad, it could be anything from ram to failing HD to reinfection with a virus or even something subtle like excessive

if you don't know how to install, it's extremely easy. I have tried a variety of the image creation and restore options for NTFS images, but no dice. Try using either the HDD manufacturer's utility or a program called gsmartcontrol. Last edited by maggiezzz; May 26th, 2013 at 12:13 AM.
Interestingly, the ntfsclone gave me a different error. Running a diagnostic test on the HDD would be a great place for you to start. Sorry, there was a problem flagging this post. this is a quote from another thread I helped a guy on... While I didn't find that exact post (Search fail: I was searching for the specific error rather than for missing OS), I have tried the restore options that the FAQ suggests.
