Not sure what you are referring to. Using Computer Management, clicked on Storage, clicked on Disk Management, the old hard drive (using a USB to SATA cable) is listed as Disk 1. Short DST-Pass Short Generic- Pass Long DST-Pass Long Generic- I assume that there is hope for retreiving the data with the above diagnodtics. It says the check will be done on reboot. I did get my hands on a USB enclosure for a 2.5 SATA drive. Thanks for any and all help…. his comment is here Another option would be to buy a new hard drive install it as the master drive in your desktop, load the OS on that and get back up and running.
The hard drive on this computer was actually a replacement drive rather than the original. The external has its own backup software and stuff pre-installed. Do you wish to continue recovery? So the old hard drive is probably marked inactive. And of couse Mom desires her data (which she failed to backup :-).. to use linux live cd with another drive (fat32) formatted connected to system. Linux should be able to read the 'bad' drive and allow you to copy the files off to fat32 drive.never tried it (as never needed to) but have read about this
